Sometimes I take it for granted that all visitors to my sites have a complete understanding and working knowledge of SEO and what it is. Therefore once in a while I like to put up a short post with a simple explanation for those that are just starting out and want to build traffic.

WHAT IS SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is a process that aims to improve volume and quality of traffic to a website through search engines. This is done by modifying webpages or websites in such a way that they appear in initial pages of a search engine when someone requests a search relevant to that webpage or website.

Importance OF SEO:

The Internet is a huge source of marketing. Business and intellectuals develop their websites so that they are able to tap a large audience. This way they can either make more sales or get their views across a wide spectrum of people.

As thousands of websites spring up nearly daily, research shows that most of the people searching on search engines for their relevant needs do not bother to go beyond the first page of results.

Therefore if a person is looking to buy cheap T-shirts online and a cheap T-shirt manufacturer has not properly optimized his website to prop up in the first page of search results, the manufacturer will lose that customer. This is because it is easy for a website to fade among thousands of other similar websites which may not be of use to the explorer.

SEO is important from a macro and micro stand point. At macro level if majority of searches are not optimized the whole point of synergies from internet is wasted. And at micro level businesses might suffer by losing possible sales.

HOW TO ACHIEVE SUCCESSFUL SEO:

Successful SEO means that the website will have a high ranking. Doing this usually involves simple steps towards optimization of the site. Following are the recommended steps that may be taken to increase a website’s awareness:
STEP 1: Research for keyword phrases need to be conducted. A domain name with keywords in the title should be used.
STEP 2: There should be valuable web content on the website. A website full of unnecessary graphics will be passed by surfers. The website needs a reasonable amount of web content that is clear and concise but also full of valuable information.
STEP 3: Ensure relevancy with all link anchor texts and title tags, as well as to the web content that is presented on the site. Links of different sites also creates awareness about the site.
STEP 4: The final step would be patience. With thousands of websites running, including those in competition, it may take a year for natural results to create heavy traffic on the website.
